AltCountry

AltCountry, you either love it or you haven't listened to the right stuff.

Whoa, whoa, whoa, sayers of nay! Don't let the word "country' scare you. After all yours truly is a lil' bit country and lil' bit rock--and I know how much you adore me, lawd hay-epp ya!

Imma gunna start ya off real real easy now:

1. To Be Young (is to be sad, is to get high)—Ryan Adams

This song normalizes the oh-so-common habit of getting back at your ex-lover by getting high. Nothing says F-you like numbing your feelings and smoking a bowl (or so I'm told. I prefer binge drinking, engaging in risky sexual behaviors, and guided imagery involving mornin' gossamer summer strolls by the lakeside).

2. To the Dogs or Whoever—Josh Ritter

Ritter's voice, story-telling, guitar/piano playing made me think I would like to engage in risky sexual behaviors with him, but then I saw a picture of the man. Don't look up images because I don't want the music to be ruined. Shit, saying that will make you look. If you must look please use one of these alternative spellings of his name: John Krasinski, or Billy McCarthy.

3. Safe Travels—Peter and the Wolf

Being in L.A. drives me nuts. I'm a nature lover, a traveler, a simple living kinda girl. This song gets me out of city, off the 405, and into greener pastures. (PacificNorthwestBeStillMyHeart)

4. The Ghost Inside Our House—Cloud Cult

Simple guitar strums and beautiful lyrics: one of my all-time favorite songs. I keep my spiritual life pretty private, but this song exposes me like no other. I wouldn’t change a lyric. Cheers to mystery, longing, appreciation, and love.

5. The Littlest Birds—Be Good Tanyas

This song puts a bounce in my step and a bright smile on my face. A sign that I'm not ready to give up my ramblin' ways? Eh, maybe, maybe not. :)

6. Furr—Bilitzen Trapper

I love this story! More familiar themes: nature, god, wondering—plus, talk of a rattlesnake!

7. Favorite—Neko Case

Her voice cuts ever soooo smoothly through butter.

8. Never Had Nobody Like You—M. Ward

I heart M. Ward's music marriage to Zooey D. (She & Him). Awwww!

9. Old Number Seven—The Devil Makes Three

Bitter alcoholic? Wannabe bitter alcoholic? This song is for you.

10. Sugar Daddy—Hedwig and the Angry Inch

Nothing is more enjoyable than singing transgender country tunes in the car, karaoke bar, or at home under the watchful eyes of a miniature parrot. You have to watch the video, too. (It reminds of the shit I try to pull when I'm having an off day.)

  2. Great playlist. Half these songs are on a CD that Sandie made for me. Which came first, the chicken or the egg?

  3. Sandie and I have a lot of music in common. You're so lucky to have both of us in your life. :)
